Socialisation & Reactive Dogs: Helping Them Feel Safe

SOCIALISATION IS A DEVELOPMENTAL WINDOW

3–12 weeks: Primary socialisation window.
8 weeks: Most puppies go to new homes — the window is mostly closed.
Adolescence brings the second fear period (6–14 months): Increased caution. Things that were once fine may suddenly feel scary. Forcing more 'socialisation' can increase anxiety and reactivity.

WHAT ACTUALLY HELPS REACTIVE DOGS — A SYSTEMATIC PROCESS

MANAGE & BELOW THRESHOLD: Find distance where your dog can notice the trigger but stay calm enough to think and take food.
DESENSITISE (GO SLOW): Gradually expose at an intensity they can cope with — not too close, not too far.
COUNTER-CONDITION (CHANGE EMOTION): Every time the trigger appears, something amazing happens. Dog = good things.
GRADUALLY INCREASE: As your dog feels safe and confident, we increase difficulty in tiny, manageable steps.

NEVER SAY 'NO' — 'NO' means nothing to a dog. It doesn't teach, it doesn't communicate — it just adds confusion.
