Why Volunteers Matter
Volunteers are not an extra pair of hands. They are the reason dogs are walked, fed, assessed, transported, matched and cared for — every single day. Without them, LUOSKO simply could not function.
A dog exercised is a dog calmer, more settled and more ready for their next step. The walk you give today is part of why a dog finds their way home.
Every enquiry answered, every form processed and every story shared connects a dog to someone who could become their family.
The person willing to collect a dog, take them to the vet or bring them to a meet-and-greet is often the reason a dog reaches safety at all.
Fundraising and events keep food in bowls, vets on call and the rescue running. Without them, none of this work would be possible.
What Volunteers Actually Do
Every role makes a different kind of difference. Some are hands-on with the dogs. Some happen behind a screen. Some happen behind the wheel. None is more important than another — each one is part of how dogs find their way home.
Kennel Volunteers
Kennel volunteers make sure every dog is not just safe — but settled, stimulated and cared for. If you want to work directly with the dogs, this is where your hands are needed most.

Admin & Social Media Volunteers
Not every vital role is hands-on with the dogs. Admin and social media volunteers keep LUOSKO organised, responsive and visible — work that is every bit as important as what happens in the kennels.

Events & Fundraising Volunteers
Every bag of food, every vet bill and every piece of equipment is funded almost entirely through public support. Events and fundraising volunteers make that possible — and they bring heart and community to everything they do.

Transport Volunteers
Transport volunteers move dogs safely between foster homes, vet appointments, adoption meet-and-greets and the rescue centre. If you drive and would like to help, every journey you make brings a dog closer to where they need to be.

The Support You'll Receive
We want every volunteer to feel supported from their very first day. You are giving us your time — the least we can do is make sure it feels worthwhile.
Every volunteer is trained before they begin — no matter their experience. You will know what to do, how to do it safely and who to ask when you are unsure.
Experienced volunteers and team members are always nearby. You are never left to figure things out alone.
New volunteers are paired with someone who has been where you are. They will walk you through your first sessions and answer the questions you might not want to ask aloud.
You join a group that notices when you are there and misses you when you are not. Volunteering at LUOSKO is not solitary — it is shared.
The skills you build here — handling, communication, confidence, teamwork — stay with you for life. Many volunteers discover strengths they never knew they had.

Even a few hours a week is enough to make a real difference to a dog's day. We work around your schedule, not the other way around.
You don't need to be an expert handler — just calm, willing and happy to be guided. We will help you build confidence at your own pace.
Every volunteer starts with training. Whether it is your first time near a kennel or your fiftieth, there is always something new to discover.
Volunteering isn't just about the tasks. It is about joining a community of people who show up for dogs — and for each other.
If you are unsure about any of these, that is completely fine. We are happy to talk things through before you apply — no pressure, no obligation.

Some volunteers go on to adopt. Many never do. Both are valued. Volunteering is a way to help dogs in its own right — not a route to faster adoption, and not a way to get to know a particular dog before applying.
The dogs need people who are there simply because they care. If your reason for volunteering is to reach adoption, that is completely understandable — but adoption follows its own journey, and volunteering won't shorten it.
