EXCUSE: "He barks because he's protective like his dad." REALITY: Barking is practised behaviour. It's often boredom, frustration, excitement or lack of clarity. WHAT YOU CAN DO: Teach the 'quiet' before the 'speak'. Set boundaries. Build calm.
EXCUSE: "He jumps up because he's confident like his dad." REALITY: Jumping gets rewarded. It's attention seeking, not confidence. We teach alternative behaviours. WHAT YOU CAN DO: Teach 4 paws on the floor. Reward calm greetings. Be consistent.
EXCUSE: "He's reactive because he's protective like his dad." REALITY: Reactivity is fear, stress or over-arousal. It's lack of emotional regulation and coping skills. WHAT YOU CAN DO: Reduce triggers. Build confidence. Change the emotion, change the response.
EXCUSE: "He doesn't listen because he's too smart like his dad." REALITY: Disengagement is reinforced. No clarity. No consistency. No follow through. WHAT YOU CAN DO: Be clear. Be fair. Be consistent. Rules don't limit freedom, they create it.
EXCUSE: "He was bred for work. He needs a job like his dad." REALITY: All dogs need a job. But the job is structure, mentality, enrichment and purpose — not intensity. WHAT YOU CAN DO: Give him a job he can win at. Engagement, focus, games and real life skills.
