Decompression: The first days and weeks are about safety, not training. A new rescue dog needs a quiet space, predictable routine and the chance to learn that this new home is not going to hurt them. Expect little, observe much.

Trust: Trust cannot be rushed. It is built in small, consistent moments — meals on time, calm voices, choices respected. A dog who trusts you will follow you anywhere.

Routine: Predictability is medicine for an anxious dog. The same things happening at the same time, gently, tells a rescue dog that the world is survivable.

Building confidence: Many arrive timid or shut down. Confidence returns through positive experiences at the dog's pace — not by pushing them into things before they are ready.

Behaviour change: Settling is not a timetable. Some dogs begin showing their normal behaviour within days, while others change gradually over weeks or months. Behaviour may emerge as acute stress reduces, sleep improves, pain is treated, attachment develops, familiar triggers appear and confidence grows.
