Why rest matters

Sleep requirements vary by age, health, activity and environment. Puppies and seniors generally require more rest. Rescue and kennel environments can fragment sleep. Poor rest can reduce coping ability, and constant activity does not produce emotional stability.

What genuine rest looks like

A dog lying down is not always relaxed. Genuine rest includes reduced scanning, softer muscle tone and an ability to disengage.

The "off switch" is the learned ability to move from activity into genuine relaxation.

Supporting it

Support the off switch through predictable quiet periods, comfortable bedding, low household traffic, calm mat work, sniffing, chewing or licking where appropriate, separation from overstimulating activity, a clear end to training, avoiding endless ball throwing, and sufficient recovery after demanding experiences.

There is no single universal number of sleep hours that applies to every adult German Shepherd.
