Heat

Thick coat does not prevent heat illness. Avoid intense exercise in heat, provide shade and water, and remember vehicles can become lethal rapidly. Weakness, confusion, vomiting, collapse and extreme panting require urgent help. Shaving is not a replacement for heat management.

Cold and wet

Tolerance varies with age, health, coat, body condition and acclimatisation. Seniors and unwell dogs may struggle sooner. Dry shelter and bedding matter.

Fireworks and noise

Prepare in advance, provide a safe area, keep identification current, do not force exposure, and seek veterinary help for severe fear.

Common toxins

Chocolate, grapes and raisins, xylitol, human medicines, antifreeze, rodenticides, mouldy food, blue-green algae and toxic plants can all be dangerous. If you suspect poisoning, contact a vet immediately.
